History of Speed: 

The community of Speed, KS, was said to be named after United States Attorney General, James Speed. For years the town was known as Big Bend, getting the name from the “big bend” in the North Solomon river. The name changed to Speed around the year 1894 due to confusion amongst similar names. The local businessmen said that the town was changed to "Speed" because “The place was making such rapid progress and it was a desirable name for a prosperous town.” (pg.140, 120 Year Review, Phillips County Review)

In 1895 a post office was opened in Speed, KS. It remained in operation until its discontinuation in 1964. The town was always known for producing an excellent annual crop. 

In the year of 2008, Speed held a special event for the Hot Wheels 40th Anniversary Cross-Country Road Trip. This event was only one of six stops in the United States of America. It brought well over 10,000 individuals to the area in celebration of Hot Wheels.

Speed is located to the west of Glade, and east of Logan at 39°40’37” N 99°25’13” W.
