Long Island:

Located in the northwest corner of Phillips County, you can find the town of Long Island. The name came from that of the Indians, who gave the title "Long Island" to the area. They did this because in 1872 and for many years following it was an island. 

Long Island was first settled in 1869 by Amos Cole, and soon after, many more settlers arrived. By the spring of 1873, many families had moved into the area and began the production of crops. A beautiful crop was produced in 1873, unfortunately, the year following, the grasshoppers arrived and killed all of the vegetables sending families back east in 1874. In 1885 the railroad arrived, bringing more individuals and families back to the area. Soon new buildings, homes, and businesses were built all around as the town began to boom.
